By tina myren as many of you heard, from june 28th july 5th, the king county sheriff closed a section of the middle middle downstream from the class 3 "middle middle" section on the class 2 "club stretch" which is very popular with beginner and intermediate kayakers. the closed section was between the projection of se 114th st. which is the "blue hole" and the projection of se 108th st. the "blue hole" is the same that many of us know as the "headwall", which for most of the last 10 years has been the takeout for most club stretch trips. the boating community was obviously concerned about the sheriff closing the stretch of river. various individuals and clubs including paddle trails and american whitewater contacted the sheriff's office, the department of natural resources, and other agencies shortly after the closure to express the concerns of the boating community and to find out accurate information. paddle trails and aw also contacted other boating clubs, including wrrr, and kept everyone up to date. the closure was a response to two accidents a drowning and a rescue ; the previous week and a couple of strainer trees in that section of the river. the swimmer that died was attempting to swim across the river, became tired and drowned. no entrapment was involved. the two women who were rescued a short time later became stranded on a huge cottonwood that spanned nearly spanned the river. none of them were wearing life jackets. the victim was the daughter of mark sollitto, tess. for a long time mark was a member of the north bend city council and also for 8 or 9 years he was the chair of the snohomish river basin salmon recovery forum, wria 9 ; . he very well known and well liked person, who has been politically and civically very active. he is a supporter of many conservation and recreational projects including the middle fork plan. he has also heard the tirades from boaters over placement of large woody debris lwd ; in rivers and the threat that lwd represent to people. there were many objections from boaters to the river closure and is understandable, especially given the problem of haphazard river closures in other parts of the country. we all need to be diligent about protecting our river access. on the other hand, the action of the sheriff's office in this case in understandable, as the victim's family was very well known and popular in north bend. the expectation is that the public would have demanded action if the sheriff had not closed the river. given the specific circumstances surrounding the accidents, no formal, public response to the closure was made by the boating community. the sheriff's office does understand that boaters are better able to maneuver and that conditions are acceptable for boaters. king county removed the cottonwood tree but there still are logs and sweepers downstream and free poker games!

It's been the better part of two decades since i moved here from the far end of route 80 with all my possessions in the back of a pickup, and about 10 years since i worked in a front-line service position here in jackson hole. mostly i'm thankful those experiences are in the past. lately, however perhaps due to the arrival of the planet's new youthful summer intern and the growing volume of out-of-state suvs between my house and the downtown offices of planet jackson hole i've been savoring memories of my first few days and months in the valley. seeing jackson hole for the first time is like meeting a movie star or famous athlete who invariably is even more beautiful or much larger in real life than they appear on tv or magazine. i hit town for the first time at night, but i'll never forget waking up in teton village the next day, walking outside and having my friend point at and describe various peaks and ski runs. i may have been nodding my head, but i don't remember a word. where i expected to see horizon, i saw mountain until the back of my head nestled between my shoulder blades. i still stare at the tetons sometimes, but, like someone who lives in harrison ford's neighborhood, rarely i star-struck anymore. while working in the service industry and living with a revolving cast of other 20-somethings, i began discovering what makes jackson hole special beyond its physical attributes. here i sensed for the first time a pride in work beyond financial compensation or social standing, and a respect for athletes of all ability levels, two concepts that helped hardwire me to this valley. and though i grew up in an ethnically diverse community, i soon realized how culturally narrow it was after meeting people from such previously exotic locales as new zealand, scotland, southern california and, well, wyoming. of course every day presents new horizons and opportunities, no matter one's age or experience. but as we mature, we tend to spend more time enjoying where we are and enhancing our existing relationships, rather than rushing toward who or what lies ahead. which makes sense. i'm just grateful that so many of my life's most transformational moments of discovery took place right here in jackson hole and star so many of teton county's finest people, past and present and Live Search.
