First off, some corrections. in a recent column i wrote here in the poker player, i told you a little about "the seniors" world championship of poker--i now must make a couple of corrections. first add the name of two additional seniors poker players that are members in good standing in "the seniors" wcop poker players hall of fame--they are the man from alaska--perry green--& super mario esquiavel next, i regret to tell you that i need to add another name to the waiting list to play in "the seniors" wcop big tournament in the sky--with a tip of the hat to puggy pearson who cashed in his chips in the game of life and moved up to the biggest of all poker games. i will always remember this one-of-a-kind poker player, and puggy pearson will be missed by me and all the poker rooms of the world. look for puggy's player profiles at guidetopoker and pokerplayernewspaper . there are poker players and then there are gamblers; walter clyde pearson is, make no mistake about it, a gambler. his rv, named the rovin' gambler is a testament to that, as is the famous legend painted on it's side. puggy, who earned that name due to his pug nose, was around in the beginning of poker becoming a respectable game, when binions launched the very first world series of poker. his learning experience with the game of no limit texas hold'em began when he walked up to a table in a poker room and took a seat. "deal me in, " he said, and proceeded to learn. why did he pick no limit texas hold'em out of all the other games being played? because it was no limit, and that's his style. some folks who are born into a family so poor they could not afford shoes for their children would grow up to be miserly or thrifty to a fault--not puggy. for him, the opposite occurred, and money became something he could get and give away, earn and gamble in huge amounts, starting when he joined the navy at 16 and began to learn his gambling ropes. a member of the poker hall of fame, puggy was easily spotted around a table or coming to say hi to a few friends by his enormous cigar. he was the third person to win the world series of poker, taking the championship in 1973. while his health didn't allow him to sit around the table of many poker tournaments in recent days, puggy often stopped by to say hello; if you ever had the chance to meet puggy, you'd sure have a treat. The fall semester has been exceptionally busy and productive for the california state university - long beach chapter. the csulb chapter successfully planned and hosted the 20th annual chi epsilon pacific district conference. over 150 students, alumni, and faculty advisors participated in the two-day event. several members of the university's chapter of chi epsilon attended regular meetings in preparation for the events of the conference. many members of our chapter and all the new initiates went to down town long beach to search for the best restaurants and bars in town so we can recommend them to our visitors from other chapters. it was mandatory for all the new initiates to attend all events of the conference. csu long beach chapter held its member initiation on december 2, 2006. we proudly added 8 new members to our chapter. the new members are: reza alamir, joey angel cardinez, ryan cataldo, edwin fletcher, spring 2007.

Maria harries suggested that the principles which should underlie ethical practices in oral history were threefold: first, there is no template as codes can miss the point by destroying the dynamism of the research process; second, all ethical practice should avoid harm; third, the interviewer has a duty of care and must extend respect and justice [that is, to defend those who can't defend themselves and to avoid discrimination and act fairly]. so if the oral history project makes interviewees unhappy or uncomfortable, it transgresses ethical principles. at an ethics workshop a number of practical ways was suggested to apply ethical principles to the research process. one point stressed was the importance of gaining genuinely informed consent. is there really a choice for the interviewee? is this a communal or individual decision? has the rationale of the project and the interviewee's part in the project been properly explained? is the consent form right? this last question is particularly important when the interviewee may disclose matters which will make the interviewer an accessory to illegal activity. it was suggested that consent form include the words, `i will maintain confidentiality to the extent allowable by law.' reliability: reliability of oral history as an acceptable and usable source was also discussed by many speakers. the ever present problem concerns both memory and the desire of interviewees to embroider or purify their stories. consequently it is important to ensure that the oral history project is poly-vocal. wherever possible it should be contextualised and supported by major research and cross referencing. geoffrey bolton, in discussing the problems of reconciling the very different opinions of paul hasluck, considered that, while we need to look for other corroboration and to investigate carefully the nature of the people presenting the opinions, we must still be mindful of the genuine variation of opinion and not seek some artificial definitive answer. process: some interesting variations between historians concerned the need for a preliminary interview. frank heimans' practice was to have an unrecorded preliminary session and he considered that this was essential to building rapport and eventually provided a better taped interview. he allowed several weeks to elapse before the final interview. he also saw great value in logging, as opposed to transcribing, interviews as the logs provide the themes. product: arguments concerned what the actual product was. perhaps the primary product is the taped, unedited interview and all else is secondary use of the product. but transcription is also part of the product. to transcribe or not transcribe was a much debated question. if left as tapes, the historical project may go nowhere. however, simple transcription does not provide context or interpretive framework. moreover, transcription is not the original document; the taped interview is. pauses, tears, tone are difficult to convey in the transcript. the verbatim transcript is also suspect as it is frequently edited to avoid the many facets of oral discourse which are annoying in a written form. there is also the and poker superstars.

Good afternoon. i hope everyone is doing well today. you may remember i was here before you last year in kansas city actually, and i was discussing with you that the legislature, because of the budget crunches that we've all seen over the last couple of years, decided to convene a joint intercommittee. this committee met several times during the off session last year and looked at very different ways of consolidating the judicial resources; there f o re, you know, tightening the budget of which they would use the money. unfortunately, some of those ways were not very -- the suggestions were not very helpful to court reporters. we saw ideas, such as consolidating all the judicial circuits, going to complete er, getting rid of court re p o all ers together. and as we watched this committee go on, we realized that for the first time in a long time, as we went into the 2004 session, we were going to need to be on defense instead of offense. and in the past we've tried to pass our page rate to get a higher rate for you all, but we realized that defense was going to be the name of the game. so we had to change our strategy a little bit. so the legislative committee and myself decided that we would not go after the page rate. we wanted to lay a little low, see what the landscape was going to be like, and that was a pretty big decision, and luckily it was the right decision to make. last year senate bill 1211 was making it through the legislature. it was a very small consent bill, and it got into the house judiciary committee, and the chairman of that committee decided to put an amendment on in committee that would take the ten court reporters from the smallest judicial circuits. and when i say the smallest judicial circuits, they determine that by caseload. and what they would do then was those ten court reporters would all of a sudden be outsourced. they would be given work from the busiest circuits and sent to those c i rcuits to do. now by this legislation, those individuals, those court reporters would not be allowed to collect their page rate on this work, would not be reimbursed for any equipment costs that they might incur. it was something that we just felt was a definite wrong move, and even though it affected -- it maybe affected a small number, it was in the direction we did not want to head. because of our friendship with leadership and some key contacts that you all have been able to make with the legislature, the house leadership went to the representative and said, "your bill will absolutely not come up on the floor unless you take this piece out." it was a v e tough fight. he finally agreed with two days to go in the session and removed that by amendment. so we had a very good victory that we can all feel v e ry proud of, and thank you to all that helped and made those phone calls and w rote those letters to make that possible. next session, we thought things were going to be a little better. anybody who reads the paper, did you see the revenues are climbing and climbing and the budget's getting better and everyone's s t a rting to be nicer to each other, believe it or not? it's a good feeling to finally see this. i think with the pre s s u coming off the budget, we're not going to see those, i consider, radical moves to change the judiciary not some of those budget-cut, ting things that we seen in the past that we had to be scared of. it's going to get a little better. we ' re going to have to continue to work with the members of the judiciary committee because, unfortunately, in the legislature, once an idea gets thrown out there, it comes back year after year. we see that for a while. so w e going to have to continue our education process with the legislature. this is extremely important because of the new climate we're all working in. as you know, two years ago term limits went into effect. under term limits, you can only serve eight years in the house or eight years in the senate. we no longer are able to create these great, s t rong relationships like we saw today with the former senator ehlmann, the f o rm senator house. and as many of er you know, we worked with senator caskey for a long time. he is gone, and you all are fortunate to be one of the few groups who can say you'll honestly miss h a rold caskey, so congratulations on that. it's no small feat, so that is something we're going to have to continue to work on. another problem with term limits, as we've seen with the shorter amount of time, we're seeing fewer and fewer attorneys in the legislature. that means there are fewer and fewer members of the 109 people who make up the general assembly that understand what you do on a daily basis and what you contribute to the judicial system. so that's another i m p reason for our education ant process and what we'll have to do. i wanted to let you all know that v e ry soon in your mailboxes at home y o u going to be receiving a letter for pac contributions. when i say, "pac, " i'm saying the political action committee, and that is a committee that has already been formed by this association. it accepts contributions from members, both individual and corporate, and those contributions are dispersed out to the legislature. when you all get this letter requesting these contributions, i would really like you to think long and h a rd about contributing. these contributions can be one time. it can be an ongoing monthly small amount, but this is our way to access the legislature. i know a lot of people go, "eeww, money, elected o fficials buying votes, " it's nothing like that. it's completely legal, and it is a way for us to get access, and access is extremely important under the circumstances that i've just described that we now find ourselves. so i want to thank you all for letting me come and talk to you today. thank you so much for your hard work in this past session. i look forward to working with you again. please feel free to contact me at any time. thank you very much.
