The exhilaration of being in the band!" by ally george 9th grader ; "the most important things are the hardest to say. they are the things you get ashamed of, because words diminish them." stephen king has managed to put into words exactly how i feel about playing in a musical ensemble. as much as i love playing saxophone, i struggle to carry even the simplest of conversations about it. it has given me a purpose and increased my drive. it has given me the confidence to reach for something greater and to be bolder in all i do. i've struggled for some time to find the right words to encompass what exactly it is that i love so much about band. i've decided that the word exhilaration comes closest, but the word alone merely scratches the surface. there are multiple levels of exhilaration, ranging in magnitude from memorable to monumental. one of said levels is a socially induced exhilaration. musicians are often some of the most incredible people to spend time with. i have yet to meet an unintelligent musician, and when you bring several bright, easy-going people together, conversation flows naturally, with little hindrance. we have the ability to make just about any situation laughable because we laugh at ourselves constantly. we create an upbeat, welcoming atmosphere simply because we enjoy each other's company. this creates countless memories and strong bonds between people, which is a vital part of success as an ensemble. it generates an enthusiasm which, when done right, can be felt when listening to one of our pieces. you could almost say it's contagious. another, and perhaps a more obvious, source of exhilaration is performance. the hours we spend on each piece all build up to the moment we walk out on stage and we remember why every rehearsal was worthwhile. the commitment becomes worth it when you know your part well enough to not have to concentrate on specific notes or rhythms and you are able to just play. my greatest hope as a musician with each performance is that the audience is able to feel the exhilaration as well, but regardless of whether they do or not, i know other people on stage are experiencing the same rush as me. these are the moments that create monumental points of elation and remind us all of what is important. there are innumerable moments of this feeling of exhilaration that i have personally experienced. each instance has shown me that it's often the little things that are of true importance. it's about the small things that all build up to a pivotal moment, where everything comes together. the common bonds between us, as members of an ensemble, through the time we spend together during rehearsals connect us. our common love and passion for what we do is what is so remarkable about playing in an ensemble, and it is what makes oswego high school's band program such a unique group to be a part of. I don't foresee the game ever going away or people losing interest in playing, and you can put a piece of it right on your manroom shelf to pull out every once and a while and remind yourself that anyone can become a world champion.
Agile, effective decision making" is the crux of information exploitation. with the increased complexities of c2, such as the increased volume and rate of information, diversity of missions, compressed time-lines, and unpredictability of adversaries, it is imperative to provide operators with powerful and effective systems to support their decision making objectives. unless the problem to solve is one that requires no flexibility in decision-making and a low probability of system failure, we believe fully automated decision support systems that provide operators with "optimal" solutions should not be the design goal. rather, the goal as stated in tenet 4 ; should be to develop decision support systems that complement human decision makers to form an integrated human-machine team capable of solving difficult problems more effectively than either working individually. in service of this goal, we present an approach to decision support system design called "structure mapping" burns & bonaceto, 2006 ; . the problem with most support systems is that they are not designed with adequate consideration of human cognitive and perceptual strengths. structure mapping rectifies this shortcoming by constructing visualizations whose features directly map to the "structure" of the problem at hand. such displays allow decision makers to reason about complicated situations with intuitive graphical representations. geospatial maps are a simple example of structure mapping. System dynamics models are being used by more and more businesses to train employees from new hires to veteran managers, communicate strategic change within the company, share mental models between stakeholders and align business perspectives between business units. advances in computer technologies help this process to a great extent by enabling users to interact with models more effectively and efficiently. this workshop will introduce you to extrain r ; , one such technology that facilitates the use of simulation models in strategy communication and management training. the extrain r ; is a web-based application platform that serves as a virtual practice field for managers to exercise decision-making power under various business conditions in a risk-free environment. extrain r ; applications can be used in individual online simulation sessions or within a facilitated environment with interaction from trainers. each application is also supported with a facilitation tool that allows trainers to monitor simulation progress, user performance and intervene if necessary. in this workshop, we will introduce you to the extrain r ; platform and its new features from a user perspective. you will also get a chance to learn more about the integration and maintenance of simulation models within extrain r ; environment. there will also be a hands-on demonstration of the system where participants will take part in a sample war-game application. participants will be divided into four teams, each of which will take control of a virtual technology company. starting on level ground, you will compete for revenue growth while maximizing profit through various business decisions. facilitation will be provided to help you understand the key business dynamics and formulate your strategy and pai gow poker or poker simulation. When hired hand charles haas was gravely injured in the late 1890s in whitewood valley, he was not taken to the nearest ranch because there were no women there. the fact that he met jennie mae pickering, the love of his life who nursed him back to health at a more distant ranch, points to the role women naturally played: that of caretakers and healers. even calamity jane did not, or could not, shy away from this role, as part of her legend is her compassion for the sick. in the same early years when deadwood was notorious for its wide-open lawlessness, it was also a place of healing. the sisters of the holy cross operated the first hospital there from 1878 until 1883. st. edward's academy, the school they established to help support the hospital, was the first high school in the area. when a typhoid epidemic broke out in deadwood, the benedictine sisters from st. martin's academy in sturgis oversaw the conversion of st. edward's into a larger hospital. in a few years, that facility reopened as st. joseph's hospital which, in 1905, established the first nursing school in south dakota. while there were no women's societies aimed at reforming deadwood's notoriously bawdy halls of entertainment, the presence of women in the community changed the character of local entertainment. the first entertainers were in fact women on stage in houses of ill repute, giving performances other women were not allowed to see. mr. and mrs. jack langrishe her name went unrecorded ; attempted to change that with the building of their own theater in 1876, she being an actress and he an impresario. other theaters, wertheimer hall, stone's opera house, nye's theater, keimer hall and the deadwood opera house, all factored in the presence of women in the audience and were themselves venues where women could entertain with propriety. in 1904, the performance of henrik ibsen's play, a doll's house, in deadwood was strong evidence that women had a voice. the play directly challenged victorian values by telling the story of a woman who left her husband for a more fulfilling life on her own. but theaters were just a tip of the social iceberg in the relatively isolated black hills. especially in the first decades of the city's history, there was a endless calendar of dances, parades, picnics, skating parties, tennis games, band concerts, and wagon or train excursions into the surrounding hills. as watson parker described in his book, deadwood: the golden years, the residents of the mining towns were more than entertaining themselves. in a place far from their origins and with great distances to more cosmopolitan settings, citizens of mining towns enjoyed each other's companionship. it can be assumed that such a social dynamic would not have developed in so rich a fashion without the presence of wives, mothers accompanied by children, and single women. it is that life of social richness and complexity from which estelline bennett wrote her account of growing up in deadwood, old deadwood days. hers was a life of relative privilege, the author being the daughter of judge granville bennett, deadwood's first federal judge. newspaper articles make clear that women of this class were valued for the elegance and delicacy they brought to the area, politely condescending as the tone sometimes was. as.

Common package of buyout terms may include any combination of cash, stock, and performance-based incentives, including "earn-outs, " which are pegged to future revenues or profits as opposed to stock price. your evaluation of the buyers should take in to account intangibles like nice people and expected stress level in the negotiations and beyond. each piece of the package balances the others until you come up with an overall impression. if you get less stock, you need more cash or other incentives, etc. the overall package, including the "social" aspects of the deal, are what you need to weigh against any other possible offers. if there are no other offers you can either keep growing the company and try to sell it again later, or take what you are being offered presently. most of the value in companies is created in the early years. this indicates that potentially you could make more money by starting and selling many different early-stage companies if you are especially productive in early years of corporate evolution, and less productive or interested in more mature operations. on the other hand, if you switch, you'd have to pay taxes, learn a new business, and reorient yourself to the new players around, especially if you have a "non-compete" agreement. therefore you'd have to start in a completely new industry or territory, because you cannot compete with your former employer the company to whom you sold out ; . the best bet if you employ this early-stage sell strategy is to focus on emerging industries eventhough they are the most risky. by definition, emerging businesses niches don't have entrenched players. you can generally compete head to head with any industry entrant at your level. but if the game is all about heavy up front capital expenditures the one with the most raw cash will likely win. small emerging industries, which are not terribly capital intensive, are open to everyone. the winners are those who employ the best business practices in an evolutionary process. you need to decide if your company is big enough to require a broker to create mergers and acquisitions opportunities or will just a great lawyer and accountant do? are people making you fair unsolicited offers or is it going to be a much more difficult process? there is a common method used in business that helps determine the "fair market value" of your company. fmv is the only price for which you can sell out. nobody wants to be in deal where fairness is not taken into account. the idea is to create an equation in which you can plug your company's "numbers" in to in order to derive fmv. generally a buyer who wants to disclose his valuation methods refers to a "multiple of your revenues" or profits that equates to what they claim is the fair market value of your company. oftentimes an industry assumes a commonly known multiple for companies that have similar-looking.
