For many students here at ab, taking a foreign language is unfortunately not seen as an important part of their education. for some, there is no longer room for it in their schedule, and they have discontinued their study. but for those who are excited about continuing a foreign language, there is a brand-new teacher who just might inspire students to make their french class a priority. nicolas cosseron, one of the newest members of the world language department, spent his youth in havre, france, in the province of normandy. with his two younger sisters, monsieur cosseron attended elementary school through high school immersed in french traditions. he studied german, but he lost interest in it as became increasingly interested in english. he later attended the university of le havre and earned his b.a. in english. like many people after graduation, monsieur cosseron was not entirely sure what it was that he wanted to do with his life. at first, he thought that he wanted to have a career in translation and eventually become an interpreter for the united nations. after finally deciding to become a translator, cosseron went back to school, to the university of paris, to get a master's degree in literary translation. after getting his master's degree, cosseron elected to go abroad and utilize his language skills as a teacher. he sought inspiration from his father, who was an english teacher, and applied for a teacher's assistant position at mount holyoke college, receiving his first experience teaching french there. he remained at mount holyoke for a year, living in a dorm and teaching all levels of french, from elementary to intermediate. after his first year of teaching, cosseron returned to france and decided to give translation a shot, applying for a position in toronto, canada, which, as it turned out, was not as exciting as he thought it would be. after this realization, he resolved to go back to the united states, deciding to teach french instead of english because he had been learning english for so long that he needed a change. as he put it, "i feel very proud to teach my native language." last june, cosseron received a master's degree in teaching at the university of massachusetts at amherst. then comes the question: what was it about ab that made him want to work here? simply put, ab was the first to reply to his job application. however, it seems to have been a good choice, as he says he really likes teaching at ab and intends to continue teaching here for some time. he now lives in watertown and, unfortunately, only moved in two days before school started, having to start the school year barely unpacked. currently, monsieur cosseron is not a united states citizen and does not want to forgo his french citizenship, which means he cannot vote in the coming presidential election. when asked how he would vote if he could, he replied, "kerry, definitely." additionally, monsieur cosseron's favorite movie is moulin rouge. that's right, moulin rouge, the american translation of a french story. don't worry; i was confused too. i was expecting some french film i had never heard of and would have a hard time spelling. monsieur cosseron is welcome here at ab and is obviously very talented in linguistics. if you didn't know better, you would think english was his first language; he speaks it without even a hint of an accent. although i have only been his student for a few weeks now, i can honestly say, and so can many of his other students, that he is a very hip teacher. maybe that will convince those of you who have dropped a language to take it up again. alors, monsieur casseron, les lves d'ab voudraient vous monsieur cosseron dire "bienvenue.

One source of state revenue that would suffer, theoretically at least, due to substitution is the state lottery. playing the lottery, after all, is a form of gambling and it is reasonable to expect that marylanders who currently play the lottery may opt to use those disposable dollars to play vlts in maryland. the relationship, however, between the two activities is not clear-cut. last year's fiscal notes for vlt legislation reflected the assessment by the state lottery agency that a 10% decline in lottery sales could be expected in the first year of vlt operations, and that one-fifth of that decline would be mitigated each year thereafter, so that projected revenues would return to their previous level after five years. the innovation group, on behalf of the owners of pimlico and laurel racetracks, notes there is a wide discrepancy in patterns of lottery revenue growth among states, and that there is not always a correlation between the introduction of gambling and a resulting decline in lottery revenue. consistent with the state lottery agency's perspective, innovation concludes that the most noticeable pattern was that "as gaming expands lottery revenues experience a temporary revenue decline, with normal growth resuming a year or so after the initiation of alternative gaming venues." to further emphasize its point that the presence of gambling is not a primary threat to lottery revenue, innovation also identifies states where lottery revenues have continued to grow throughout the introduction of casino gambling or slots, as well as other states where lottery revenues have declined even without the presence of gambling. examining the raw data provided by innovation, however, suggests a much more bleak outlook for lottery revenues, at least in the immediate period following slots introduction. peak-to-trough declines for lottery revenues in states where gambling was either initiated or ramped-up have ranged up to 40%. of six states singled out by innovation, only one rhode island ; did not experience a decline in lottery revenues. the other five experienced declines between 15% and 40%. moreover, in several of these states, gambling introduction was too recent to determine whether lottery revenues ever stabilized or rebounded after the introduction of gambling.
Poker hand odds with two cards to come should be used in allin situations and poker card games. From importing and exporting "goods designed for the execution of human beings" e.g. gallows, guillotines and electric chairs ; , and certain goods with no other use than for torture or ill treatment including electroshock belts ; . the trade regulation also requires government export authorization for a range of policing and security equipment, including restraint chairs, leg irons, shackles and thumb-cuffs; portable electroshock devices; and certain chemical irritant devices such as pepper sprays.44 the ec trade regulation also covers dual-use technologies with a catch-all clause for equipment with applications in weapons of mass destruction. ec dual use regulation no. 1334 2000 has a 72-page list of controlled dual-use items such as "acoustic beam forming software" and "filament winding machines" ; , but none of these items have applications in torture.45 the regulation does, however, include a provision article 4 ; for controlling goods not on the list, if either the government or the exporter suspects the goods are intended for use in weapons of mass destruction, or for military equipment in embargoed countries.46 in this respect it could serve as a model for a catch-all clause for equipment with applications in torture for the asia-pacific region. the ec trade regulation is not a perfect model. a recent amnesty international report47 exposed loopholes that still allow a range of "torture tools" to be traded from the eu without control, and the regulation does not control transfers of equipment internally within the eu. and of course, any mechanism is only as good as its implementation at the domestic level. however, it is the first international control on such equipment, and is likely to become more effective as it is adapted and strengthened over the coming years. given that the current lack of regional control mechanisms in the asia-pacific region can only facilitate china's trade in tools of torture, a mechanism modelled on the ec's ground-breaking legislation could at least serve as a step forward. the centrality of the asia pacific region to this global trade in "torture tools" means that an asian trade control mechanism is even more urgently required. an asian regional association could design and implement such a regulation, perhaps modeled on the ec "torture trade" regulation. the association of southeast asian nations asean ; would be the most obvious choice, but mainland china, taiwan and south korea are not members, and given their dominant role in electroshock weaponry and security equipment trade, any meaningful regional controls must include all three. political agreement between these three states is difficult, but without trade controls, chinese companies will continue to profit from the trade in the tools of torture; domestic police and security forces will continue to have access to equipment with which to torture prisoners; and torture equipment will continue to be supplied to torturers and human rights abusers in other countries. Conception and concepts conception is an act whereas concepts are thoughts with a special quality: the sense of sameness. william james [1890: 436] describes the difference between the two terms as: the function by which we thus identify a numerically distinct and permanent subject of a discourse is called conception; and the thoughts which are its vehicles are called concepts. [w.j. italizing and capital letters] and william james [1890: 437] later describes the result of the conception as follows: thus amid the flux and opinions and of physical things, the world of conceptions, or things intended to be thought about, stands stiff and immutable, like plato's realm of ideas. however, there are some significant differences between the philosophical world of ideals and the results of our conception. all our concepts are personal and individual: they are based on our own personal experience. the users conception of a piece of electronic equipment is therefore the result of his total experience and it is different from the designers conception of the same piece of equipment. we can only experience a concept when we think about it, and the concept we experience depends on the situation when we are thinking about it. william james [1890: 959] writes: "when we conceive of s merely as m ., we neglect all the other attributes which it may have, and attend exclusively to this one. we mutilate the fulnes of s's reality. every reality has an infinity of aspects of properties. even so simple a fact as a line which you trace in the air may be considered in respect to its form, its length, its direction and its location. when we reach more complex facts, the number of ways in which we may regard them is literally endless. all ways of conceiving a concrete fact are equally true ways. there is no property absolutely essential to any one thing. the same property which figures as the essence of a thing on one occasion becomes a very inessential feature upon another." [w.j. italizing and capital letters] the user will conceive of the equipment in different manners depending on the type of situation when he conceives of it. it is in particular likely, that the concept that the user describes when asked, are different from what he conceives while using the equipment. different types of concepts when we conceive of something, we find something we can identify the concept by. william james [1890: 437] expresses it as: any factb-12t methinge evactor equinitr may be conceiindufficeritally al and web poker or poker stats. Let me be a bully, and being a bully made me feel good. i'd like to continue this discussion by asking you to look inside yourself and tell yourself, openly and honestly, without judgment or recrimination, why you play poker. what do you get out of it? do you do it for revenge, like me? to show off? to test testosterone? list all the reasons you can, the bad as well as the good. don't worry about revealing harsh truths; you don't have to show anyone your list, and you can burn it or swallow it when you're done. once you have a clear picture of yourself and your motivations, turn your attention to the players around you and ask yourself, why do these people play? speculate on their darkest secrets. see if you can detect their demons. list these discoveries too, for every word is a weapon: this guy looks pissed off. i can attack his anger. that woman is flirting. is she after approval? these old men are lonely. they play and therefore pay? ; for company. you don't have to guess right, you know. it may be that she's flirting just because she likes you. ; the mere act of guessing will sharpen your ability to see into your opponents more deeply and accurately. it's mind reading, after a fashion, and it's a skill worth developing. some day, maybe as soon as tomorrow, someone sitting across from you is going to make a big bet or a raise, and something about it is not going to smell right. then your gift of insight will kick in and you'll say to yourself, hey, it's not even me he's attacking. it's someone he knew a long, long time ago. and then you'll know how to attack him back. but i'm here to tell you that you'll never develop insight into others until you have insight into yourself. i've done myself a tremendous service by acknowledging that i carry sgrs. it didn't hurt that much to admit it to myself, and it doesn't hurt all that much to share my discovery with you. it unclogs the pores of my perception, as it were. it lets me see things as they are. "the child is the father of the man, " said william wordsworth, and he sure got his words' worth out of that one. we are who we were. the bully or the coward or the nerd or the wallflower or the flake of our youth lives within us to this day. we may be able to manage that beast, but only if we acknowledge that beast. i truly believe that those who are open and honest with themselves compete more effectively in poker stats than those who are not. not everyone agrees with this, and that's okay. call me on it you like. challenge my assertion next time you see me at the table. i'll be the smart guy, looking for revenge. Later that week, shahade and krush joined 56 other chess players in seattle for the 2003 u.s. chess championship. shahade was the defending women's champion, and krush wanted a shot at the title, which she had earned once before, in 1998. when shahade won in 2002, it was the first time women and men had played together in the 157-yearold national tournament. no female player had ever qualified to enter the championship, and in 1937 a separate women's division was created, in which female players competed among themselves for the title of u.s. women's champion. in 2002, the women's division was dissolved, though the title remained. shahade, who did not face any women in the tournament, nonetheless became u.s. women's champion by achieving the highest score of all the women. at the players' meeting before the 2002 tournament, some men had complained that the participation of women would degrade the quality of the play, but shahade proved them wrong. in the very first round, she disposed of gennady sagalchik, a brooklyn-based grandmaster who had been particularly vocal in objecting to the inclusion of women. "i was delighted to beat sagalchik, but not because he was being sexist, " shahade said later. "i didn't think he was. i didn't think he was speaking about me--i knew i would give the men a fight, and he probably knew that too--but about some of the other, lower-ranked female players. i was glad to beat him because i had a pattern of reaching good positions against grandmasters, getting nervous, and making inaccurate moves to let them slip away." even shahade is not entirely convinced that having a coed championship is in the best interest of women's chess. while the top-ranked women are strong enough to give the men a good fight, or even beat them, the lower-ranked qualifying women are weaker than the weakest men. "is it good for a young woman's confidence and chess career if she has a horrible result in the u.s. championship?" asked shahade. "maybe it would be better for her to play in an all-women's event? but i can also argue the reverse--that it is motivating to play in a championship with the country's best players, and that women will get better as a result." the 2003 tournament was more difficult for her. after a slow start and a seventh-round victory, she found herself tied for first among the women and, therefore, in a good position to retain her title. her brother was also competing in the championship--the first time since 1969 that siblings had played in the competition at the same time--and he, too, had an important victory in the seventh round. 1996 . guilford: connecticut council on problem gambling. * steinberg, m. a., kosten, t. a., & rounsaville, b. j. 1992 ; . cocaine abuse and pathological gambling. american journal on addictions, 1, 121-132. stinchfield, r., cassuto, n., winters, k., & latimer, w. 1997 ; . prevalence of gambling among minnesota public school students in 1992 and 1995. journal of gambling studies, 13 1 ; , 25-48. taira, r. r. 1993 ; . legal gambling among japanese americans master's thesis, california state university, long beach ; . ann arbor, mi: umi dissertation services. task force on gambling addiction in maryland. 1990 ; . final report: task force on gambling addiction in maryland . baltimore: maryland department of health and mental hygiene, alcohol and drug abuse administration. * templer, d. i., kaiser, g., & siscoe, k. 1993 ; . correlates of pathological gambling propensity in prison inmates. comprehensive psychiatry, 34, 347-351. * thompson, w. n., gazel, r., & rickman, d. 1996 ; . the social costs of gambling in wisconsin. wisconsin policy research institute report, 9 6 ; , 1-44. * transition planning associates. 1985 ; . a survey of pathological gamblers in the state of ohio. philadelphia: author. * ubell, e. 1991, june 2 ; . are you a gambler? parade magazine, 8. * vagge, l. m. 1996 ; . the development of youth gambling. unpublished honors thesis, harvard-radcliffe colleges, cambridge, ma. * volberg, r. a. 1992a ; . gambling involvement and problem gambling in montana. albany, ny: gemini research. volberg, r. a. 1992b ; . treatment of pathological gamblers in montana: past, present and future. albany, ny: gemini research. * volberg, r. 1993a ; . gambling and problem gambling among adolescents in washington state. albany, ny: gemini research. volberg, r. a. 1993b ; . estimating the prevalence of pathological gambling in the united states. in w. r. eadington & j. a. cornelius eds. ; , gambling behavior & problem gam. Table 2.1: examples of algorithm complexity classes. long as we understand that a step that requires one second to compute today, might take only one-hundredth of a second to compute in the future. suppose we have a different problem, for example, "for some set s, what is the sum of each element with each of the other elements?", then s is passed as the input to a new algorithm, and n |s|. consider the following algorithm total 0 for each s in s for each s' in s, such that s' nequal s total total + s + notice the two for each loops. we can easily see that this algorithm, with an input of size n, will not take more than n2 steps to return the correct solution. we say that this algorithm to solve this problem has o nk ; complexity for some known constant k, or that the time taken by this algorithm to solve this problem grows polynomially over n. this is a polynomial-time algorithm. table 2.1 shows the number of steps required by different classes of algorithms against a growing instance size. in o ; we analyse over an increasing n that asymptotically approaches infinity. here we see that o n ; algorithms eventually emerge to be faster than o nk ; algorithms where k 1 ; . this table also introduces exponentialtime algorithms. these algorithms have o 2n ; complexity. polynomial-time algorithms are much more desirable than exponential-time algorithms. as n increases and asymptotically approaches inifinity, the time required by any exponential-time algorithm to solve a problem instance of size n will eventually be more than that taken by any polynomial-time algorithm.
