By matthew lake "we are a family!" coach david hendler "hbomb", or "h-dawg" ; repeats to his track team. they sit in the schools basement, where they start every season. seniors travis williams and adam titterton squat among rejected school desks too profane for a classroom, dimmed, flickering florescent lights, dark hallways rumored to lead to merrick ave middle school in an underground system similar to harriet tubman's, and rusted white pipes just three inches above their heads, all while they try to concentrate on their first workout of the winter. it is barely 20 degrees outside; "we are training to be mailmen, " captain j. hill quickly points out. no, they are training for war. our track team has its own "clique" at calhoun. they hang out together every weekend. have you ever asked why? you can find a poker tour game any weekend at a "trackie's" house, walleyball battles a genius rendition of volleyball played indoors w i t enclosed walls ; twice a month, and pingp o n g tournaments in the basement e v e winter, but this is not the reason for their bond. in pursuit of the conference championship, this winter mile specialist, nick luis, expects 16 mile repeats in the snow, freezing rain, and hail at least twice. he can guarantee a half dozen seven mile runs before the end of any given season. he can guarantee wanting to puke, wanting to quit, wanting to give up, wanting to scream at mr. hendler six times a outside; it would be far too cruel in 35 degree rain. he creates his family here. he watches the four runners sprint every 400 meters and gives them their one minute rest. he ignores t h e gasps. a f t every 400 e a c runner f a l hands to his knees, a growing pain in his stomach and a burning sensation in his lungs. 60 seconds. he gets on the line and goes again. they share the pain, the agony, the strain. your muscles pull you back, your brain tells you to stop, but your goal, your heart, your competitive drive, your need to win makes you keep going. most of all, the other three guys running with you make you keep going. you do not want to be the only one who cannot finish the workout, the one who is the weakest, the one who lets the team down. pull your head up and see the same thing, a struggle for oxygen, a struggle to win. here is the family. this family has become accustomed to success. in cross country the running record is 39-0 over the last three years. they have won the last three conference championships in "xc" and winter track in addition to sending six competitors to the state meet since 2003: justin appel, chris joannou, alex demosthenos, keith mcelwain, sean mahon, and this year mike sciolto, who went all-state. yet, every season they start in the "dungeon" of calhoun, just the way they like it together and alone.
