Reo surround sound is adequate but restrained. the dolby digital track, however, is super, with rear channel separations, clear definitions and lots of power. the film is also presented in french in standard stereo and can be accompanied by english, french or spanish subtitles. there are two trailers we couldn't tell what they were marketing differently, although the second one seems a bit more excitable ; , a decent cast and crew profile and some production notes. as we mentioned, there are also about 40 minutes worth of special effect breakdown sequences, where each of the components for a special effects shot is presented in both preliminary and final stages while voiceover narration by the various effects personnel explains how the sequence was put together. zemeckis and starkey take a while to get warmed up, talking in general terms at first and jumping around to cover scattered details, but they eventually get deeper into why certain approaches were taken--such as the reasons behind using complicated effects to achieve special camera angles in the place of simpler, less interesting angles at key dramatic moments--and explain what they wanted to achieve thematically. ralston and rosenbaum leave some gaps during longer dialogue sequences, but they talk most of the time, explaining the components that went into each shot even in non-fantasy shots, they had to fiddle with the weather and things ; and giving sort of an alternate, `outsider's' view of zemeckis' working methods. foster's commentary is the least interesting of the three. she has a few anecdotes about the shoot, talks a bit too much about what is happening to her character on screen and says very little about her craft, except the extreme necessity of knowing how to hit your three dimensional marks in a special effects-heavy film like this. starstruck viewers will still find her talk worthwhile, because foster goes the distance, but the substance of her comments is limited. nevertheless, the combination of all three commentary tracks gives the viewer a much deeper sense of how the film was created than any one of the three, even zemeckis and starkey's effort, can deliver singularly.
