Can you believe it's september already? as summer fades into fall and the days get shorter, our regular bicycling program is nearing its seasonal end. we still have most of our favorite night rides and several great tours ahead, including covered bridge century, tour of the hocking hills, knox county bicycle challenge, columbus fall challenge and fall hoot. but by mid-october, these tours and most of the weekly rides will come to an end. rather than dwell in the past, i find myself looking to the future of the bicycling program as we begin to wrap up the 2002 season. as i see it, the future of our program is wide open and depends on you, not someone else and most especially not on me. i play a key role, but one that is relatively small in the overall program, when you consider the time and effort of several dozen ride and tour leaders. my role is to coordinate, cajole, encourage and take care of lots of details. if you think something is missing, tell me. if it's something you can do, volunteer to do it. if it's something you can't do, help me think of ways to make it happen and suggest others who can help. as many of you know, someone else will be writing this column by this time next year. when i took on this interesting challenge last year, i knew that two years would be enough and that i would want to move on to other adventures. i will still be very much involved in the program. if you know of anyone, including yourself, who might like to take on the challenge of being the activity leader, please talk to me about it. let's go out to lunch and talk. i believe that the new leader needs to be someone who wants to grow and strengthen the program for a wide variety of bicyclists, has and uses e-mail and wants to involve lots of people. this person also needs to be willing to work an average of three to five hours a week on the project, not counting rides where you invariably will conduct some cop business. you don't have to be retired. i'm convinced that this volunteer job will seem unattractive to most if we ask or expect activity leaders to give more than this amount of time. benefits of doing this include learning a lot about yourself and about human relations, not to mention being in contact with a lot of really great people in our program and in other activities at cop. one final note: you may start seeing some of our ride and tour leaders wearing a really cool jersey. these jerseys are being given to our bicycling leaders as an incentive for participating in leader training sessions that include a review of risk management issues and bicycling safety matters. i want all of our ride and tour leaders to have a jersey, and i'm confident that this can happen within the next six months. however, i cannot just give them away, as the money to buy them came from the risk management budget with strings attached to the use of the funds. we will have more training sessions in the winter, and hopefully, more jerseys to distribute. thank you to everyone who has helped with the bicycling program this spring and summer. see you on the road this fall. We appreciate the members of our congregation who are volunteering to welcome each person who joins us for sabbath services on friday evenings. we wish to thank our greeters for the month of april: annmarie strickler, art and barbara miller, robbie rubin, victor sachse and chip mann. greeters for the month of may will be: carol newman, aileen dampf, confirmation parents and metz kahn.

July 15th, 2005 so, there hasn't been much to post, only because i've been busy with administrative tasks -- i've been planning out the costume schedule as it corresponds to the days in the narrative of the movie; coordinating a rehearsal schedule for august; etc.; etc. in other news, roland emailed me a version of the "picking through celebrities' trash" theme song that's perfect, mix-wise. also, it appears that anna porter is going to be our makeup artist. also, i'm in the process of securing a cab for us to use as the taxi in the four scenes that we need one for. in other news, rike and i have worked out how to handle getting the glass that she designed for the movie. she's going to ship it to me had offered to pay for her to mail it to new york from deutscheland ; , and in exchange i'm going to buy her a few pairs of slippers that she wants from pearl river in downtown manhattan. that's a pretty fair trade. besides, i have a thing for buying shoes for women i'm kidding.
Can you think of any parts of the educational materials market that seem to be emerging? in growth? in maturity? in decline? some markets or trends, such as textbooks, have a very long life cycle. once they hit maturity, they stay there for a long time. others, such as teaching machines, had a very short life cycle. it is important to look at your markets and products in terms of their life cycle in order to assess the risks and opportunities inherent in each phase. obviously, if a market is in decline, it would not seem smart to enter it. on the other hand, if a market is just emerging, you should consider all the risky characteristics of emerging markets before making an entry decision and ultimate poker.

Closing speech of maria gabriella ottaviani ipc chair icots-6, university of rome "la sapienza", italy the isi interests in the improvement of statistics education began in 1949, immediately following the second world war, with the founding of the committee on statistical education. through this committee, the institute itself promoted the university training of statisticians at an international level, while in developing countries the isi concerned itself with the education of official statisticians. the isi began paying more attention to teaching statistics in schools following the mid-seventies. in those years, mainly in developed countries, the teaching of mathematics in schools began to change, so that also statistics and probability could find a place within the mathematics programme in pre-university schools. from 19791987, the education committee, chaired by professor j. gani, succeeded in obtaining important results through the creation of diverse "taskforces". thanks to these, but also thanks to the willingness and involvement of those in charge of each taskforce, significant initiatives were taken. in 1979, at the international centre for statistical education at sheffield university, "teaching statistics" was first published, one of the most important didactic statistical journals distributed all over the world. furthermore the international conferences on teaching statistics were initiated in sheffield in 1982, thanks to l. rde and v. barnett. since then they have continued once every four years, in accordance with the views expressed by the first icots participants, who hoped that "this conference will be the first of a series of such international conferences on teaching statistics to be held at four-yearly intervals". according to these wishes, icots-2 was held in victoria canada ; in 1986 and icots-3 took place in dunedin new zealand ; in 1990. the success of the icots demonstrated that statistics teachers felt a strong need to unite, talk and discuss the problems experienced in the course of their daily activities. in the meantime, it gave specialists in epistemology, psychology and statistical education the possibility to expound the results of their research and theories. the importance of these forces was recognised by the isi at the cairo conference in 1991, where the proposal to establish an international association for statistical education iase ; as a new section of the isi was approved by a unanimous vote of the isi general assembly. as a consequence of this, the statistical education activities were transferred to the iase, who had to continue with the icots program. a transitional committee, chaired by d. vere-jones 1991-1993 ; , took the most important decisions about the venue and organisation of icots-4 in marrakech morocco ; in 1994. icots-5 in singapore, in 1998, was the first icots completely designed and organised by the iase. the contents of any thematic conference are supposed to evolve and change over time. the icots conference is now 20 years old and 6 meetings have taken place, icots-6 having been held in cape town south africa ; in july 2002. the time has come to analyse if and how a line of thought exists which has developed from 1982 to 2002. to examine carefully the proceedings of the previous five icots is quite an impossible task as the number of published papers is 783. about icots-6, at october 27, 2001, the date of this analysis, the international programme committee website presented 224 invited paper titles. a possible solution to the problem posed comes from statistics itself, in particular from "textual statistics" elbert, salem, berry, 1998 ; , a field of research helpful to describe, compare and classify sets of texts. the textual analysis has proved to be a useful arian's thread in the labyrinth of the six corpora formed by assembling the papers' titles of each icots conference. in particular the analysis has allowed enlightening that icots-1 was mainly a matter of teachers and teaching, neither the students nor the learning problems being the conference concerns. at icots-2 students were in more evidence as well as teaching and learning problems. at icots-3 the students were right in the centre. at icots-4 the focus was on the teaching of statistics per se. icots-5 emphasised the necessity to prepare teachers and students in statistics. at icots-6 the focus has been on research. the textual analysis has allowed showing that, from an academic incept due to its strong link with university professors, the conference moved to deal with teaching learning problems and came to enlighten students' problems and their performance. teaching by real data, suitable computer packages, and research methods were emphasised to grasp the concepts of statistics and probability. in higher education the attention was on introductory courses and on courses of applied statistics for students of the experimental sciences. in more recent years, the proposal of instructional models suitable for statistics and probability, and the necessity to assess students have enhanced the interest of icots attendants towards research. however, educational research in statistics and probability has not only a value per se, but is also finalised to help better disseminate and teach the discipline. consequently the next step to develop might be reflecting on what the statisticians and the statistics education researchers have to offer and to learn from each other as part of a and palm poker. The video poker game player that expects to win on only good hands would probably do, better playing a different game.
Name. the detail is superb. only i always had the feeling the speakers were never quite placed right, or that they weren't suited to the room. we tried. perhaps they'll deliver their exciting promise in your room. we couldn't get what we wanted in either of ours. --gerard rejskind.
